Nothing is as thrilling as a virtuosic piano concerto, played flawlessly by an experienced concert pianist. Nothing is as relaxing as a soothing jam, keyed by a diehard bluesman. Until recently, one would have to venture to far off concert halls and smoky jazz clubs to hear such performances, combating the hardships of travel, and the confines of tour dates…but not anymore. In the most recent revision of Yamaha’s revolutionary line of computerized pianos, the Disklavier Mark IV, the latest in electronics technology has been combined with the flawless craftsmanship of Yamaha’s latest pianos to create an autonomous polymath, capable of playing completely by itself, as an addition to your playing, or traditionally, as a regular piano. Besides performing, the piano can also teach melodies, and eventually provide backing tracks for what you’ve been taught, played through the built in speaker system, or throughout your home audio setup.

The core of this amazing musical gadget is a hearty Linux operating system stored on an 80 gigabyte harddrive, and controllable through the included touch-screen remote control. The wireless controller can be used quite far away from the piano, through walls and even across floors, to que up musical choices, and display critical information, like lyrics for karaoke. The piano itself is Wi-Fi capable, making downloading files to the piano much easier. If you already own a recording of a particular composition, all you need to do is pop the CD into the built in drive, acquire the corresponding MIDI file, and sit back to enjoy a fully orchestrated rendition of your favorite piece. The possibilities are endless with this piano, and time will only yield more and more.

For musicians of all abilities, the Disklavier has features that will change the way they practice and perform. For the beginner, Yamaha’s unique SmartKey software will guide you through songs, waiting for you to hit the correct key before it moves on. As the player gets more advanced, they can videotape their performances, and then attach their camcorder to the piano to listen and observe an exact replica of what they played for scrutinization. To make practice–something pianists of all levels must do– more convenient and less disruptive, one can play the Disklavier normally, and listen to the sound output through headphones, disabling the acoustic output of the instrument.

For music lovers, practitioners, teachers or composers, the Yamaha Disklavier Mark IV offers an incredible and comprehensive set of features spanning the learning, performing and teaching process, and, for those who can afford the wallet-draining price-tag (starting at $11,000), will change the way you experience music forever.
